Gift cards are plastic cards that have replaced the labor-intensive paper gift certificates of the past. Gift cards are loaded with a specific dollar amount using a credit card terminal, are paid for in advance, and are used as cash for future purchases with the issuing company.

Since gift cards are generally given as gifts, they are terrific for increasing your customer base. American Express estimates that gift card balances will surpass $1 billion in the next few years.
Most gift cards are issued in set dollar amounts, such as $10, $20, $50, or $100. Gift cards are generally customized with your business logo. Many businesses are now using gift cards for returned merchandise. Instead of giving cash or bankcard credits, using gift cards allows you to keep more cash in your register.

You also retain more cash because a significant percentage of gift card balances are used over long periods of time or abandoned altogether, due to loss.

Like gift cards, loyalty cards are plastic or even paper cards with special incentives to motivate your customers to reuse them and visit you again and again.

Loyalty cards help you to track customer visits or purchases and make it easy for you to reward your loyal customers.

Most loyalty programs use a point system to track data like number of visits, purchase amounts and special dates or customer referrals. Accumulated points are then redeemed for free items, discounts, dollar-off coupons or special offers.

Gift card and loyalty card programs give your business added exposure and credibility.

They also boost profitability, since customers pay full price more often, make bigger purchases and spend more than the original card value, by as much as 65% on average.

1.59% - A Qualified Transaction is the rate that card present merchants pay when the swipe a card at the time of the sale. This is your base rate.

0.90% - A Mid-Qualified Transaction is the rate you pay for cards that are not swiped. It is also the rate paid for rewards cards. Your Mid-Qualified rate equals your Qualified Rate (1.59% ) +your Mid-Qualified rate (0.90) = 2.49%

3.25% - This is the rate you should expect to pay when you don't enter the 3 digit security code found on the back of the card as well as the zip code associated with a card holders address. It is also the rate you should expect to pay for commercial & international cards.

2.89% - AMEX at their own discretion may opt to charge a flat monthly service fee instead of a percentage. American Express is its own independent entity and NoblePay has no control over their pricing structure.

The use of "rewards cards" can be as high as 40% of all transactions. Rewards cards are typically grouped into the Mid-Qualified tier as they cost more in interchange costs which is why the rates are higher than Qualified cards.

Mid-Qualifed transactions are for card not present sales.

Rewards cards are charged at the Qualified tier plus the Mid Qualified rate.  (For Example) If your Qualified rate is 1.59% and the Mid Qualified rate is 0.90 %, your effective rate would be 2.49 %. If you're not a card present merchant your starting rate would be at the Mid Qualified level. (For Example) 2.09% - this means your rewards card rate would also be 2.09%.

Card present merchants can ask for interchange plus pricing. This would bring your effective rewards card rate between 1.9% to 2.09%. Interchange plus pricing is a more complex pricing structure but may be more beneficial to the merchant processing larger volumes of rewards based cards.
