All Merchant Accounts are not Equal

standing_outI was talking with a friend of mine that owns a website and does business online the other day. So of course, I got on the subject of credit card processing. Somewhere in the conversation I happened to ask him who took care of his merchant account.

Now I’m not going to go into who it was or any of the details. What I really wanted to discuss today is his indifference. You see, his answer was a big, fat, “Dunno. Why? Does it matter?”

…..Um, yeah. It does matter.

If you are not paying attention to who handles your merchant account then you probably aren’t aware of the fees assessed either. This boils down to one thing. You might be getting robbed with every transaction you process.

Some people are going to read this post and respond much like my friend did. “What’s the big deal? We’re getting paid on our transactions.” My response is yes, you are getting paid, but you’re not getting paid as much as you could be. Some merchant accounts charge more than others. Some have a per transaction charge. Some process at a higher percentage of each sale. Some offer lower costs in one area to cover the fact that they have higher charges in others. I could go on, and on, and on.

The point is this. You need to ask questions and you need to know the facts when it comes to your merchant account. If you don’t have the answers to some of the questions I’ve covered today, get them. Call your provider and ask them point blank. Or, you could call our offices as well. If you need help making decisions about who to go with, give us a call. We’ll shoot straight with you and give you the answers you’re looking for.
